After Adrian Wojnarowski‘s departure from ESPN to become the general manager of St. Bonaventure’s men’s basketball program, there’s been a lot of buzz about who might step into his shoes as the go-to NBA insider for the network. According to Michael McCarthy at Front Office Sports, Schefter is being considered for the role of ESPN’s senior NBA insider while still keeping his NFL duties. They’re calling it the “Ultimate Insider” gig.

Now, this isn’t a done deal by any means. McCarthy mentioned that it’s still early days, but both Schefter and ESPN are interested in the possibility. It would definitely be a big change for Schefter, who already has his hands full with NFL news. But let’s be real, it would also come with a nice bump in his $9 million-a-year paycheck.

Schefter has actually dabbled in NBA coverage before, occasionally doing sideline reporting for games. So it’s not totally out of left field. Plus, there’s a clause in his contract that allows him to work as an NBA sideline reporter, so it seems like he’s had his eye on the basketball court for a while.

But Schefter isn’t the only one in the running. According to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, Jeff Passan, who’s currently ESPN’s MLB insider, is also a contender. If he gets the gig, he’d shift gears from baseball to focus solely on the NBA. That’s a pretty big move in itself.

Of course, there are other familiar faces at ESPN who could step up to the plate as well. Ramona Shelburne, Brian Windhorst, and Tim Bontemps all have the chops to take on a bigger role in NBA coverage.

It’s definitely an exciting time for NBA news at ESPN with all these potential changes in the works. As for Schefter, it sounds like he’s open to the idea of diving into the world of basketball. In fact, he once said, “I’ve always had a passion for the NBA.” So maybe this could be his chance to bring that passion to the forefront.
