The AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, was the site of an unexpected incident before the game against the Houston Texans on Monday, November 18, 2024.
The game, which ended in a 34-10 loss for the Cowboys, was marked not only by the team’s poor performance but also by a technical issue related to the stadium’s retractable roof.
The retractable roof Issue
Before the game began, AT&T Stadium was in the process of opening its retractable roof, a common procedure when weather conditions allow. However, while the roof was being opened, a piece of metal covering one of the cable trays was detached by a gust of wind.
Although the incident did not result in any injuries or damage, the roof had to be immediately closed to ensure the safety of the attendees and players.
AT&T Stadium, which features a large retractable roof, has experienced similar issues in the past, although none as significant as this one. Problems with retractable roofs are not uncommon in modern stadiums with such complex designs.
Arlington’s response
Following the incident, the City of Arlington conducted a thorough inspection of the stadium. Susan Schrock, the city’s communications coordinator, clarified that the issue was limited to a piece of metal dislodged by the wind and not due to any serious structural failure.
In statements to the press, Schrock explained: “Our building inspector and our deputy fire marshal spoke with the stadium crews and determined that there were no structural issues with the venue or the roof.”
As a result, the stadium was cleared for continued use, with no significant safety risks identified. However, the Cowboys may opt to keep the roof closed for future games until further testing and checks are done to ensure its full safety.
Despite the setback, the Dallas Cowboys are moving forward with their season schedule. This weekend, they will face the Washington Commanders in Landover, Maryland, and will return to AT&T Stadium on Thursday, November 28 for a Thanksgiving Day game against the New York Giants.
While the incident did not have serious consequences, it highlights the importance of stadium safety and the need for strict preventive measures to avoid future accidents.
