Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed today that Patrick Mahomes and several key starters will sit out the final regular season game against the Denver Broncos.
With the Chiefs (15-1) already clinching the AFC’s top seed and a first-round playoff bye, Reid has opted to prioritize rest and recovery for his team.
Andy Reid gives Carson Wentz the start
Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz will make his first start of the season, leading a roster of backups as the Chiefs close out their regular season.
“I’ve been through that before, so I’m not too worried about all that,” Reid said when discussing the extended break for his starters.
“It gives the other guys an opportunity here to grow, and you can use everybody.”

Reid emphasized the importance of maintaining sharpness despite the time off.
“The primary thing is to make sure that we stay sharp in all areas through this game and for the upcoming weeks,” he said.
“We want to stay sharp mentally and physically … how we manage the time is key.”
According to reports, other players expected to rest include tight end Travis Kelce, defensive lineman Chris Jones, and running back Isiah Pacheco.
This decision gives Denver a strong chance to capitalize on a must-win scenario.
A victory would secure the Broncos a postseason berth, though losses by the Bengals and Dolphins could also get them in.
Despite the favorable circumstances, the Broncos face a challenge.
The Chiefs’ depth and coaching make them formidable even without their starters.
For Denver, this game represents not only a shot at ending their postseason drought but also a chance to avoid the embarrassment of a late-season collapse.
Meanwhile, Wentz views the opportunity as valuable preparation for a potential playoff role.
“This will definitely be helpful if needed in whatever capacity down the stretch,”Wentz said.
“But quite frankly, I’m just excited to get out there and play ball.”
As the Chiefs prepare for their playoff run, all eyes will be on the Broncos to see if they can seize the moment and punch their ticket to the postseason.
