The Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line struggles came under intense scrutiny after their lopsided loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.

NFL legend Andrew Whitworth weighed in on the issue, offering advice to head coach Andy Reid as the Chiefs look to regroup and make critical decisions this offseason.

Chiefs look to fix offensive line

Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Whitworth, a former All-Pro tackle with a 16-season career, shared his concerns about the Chiefs’ offensive line, which struggled to protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl.

“It’s going to be interesting to see what they really decide to do with the offensive line,” Whitworth said.

“At the tackle position… over the last couple years they’ve had some up and down play there.”

The Chiefs faced serious challenges at the tackle position during the 2024 season, particularly with left tackle Joe Thuney moving to the edge to fill in for struggling players.

Thuney’s shift ultimately highlighted weaknesses across the offensive line.

“I was concerned with Joe Thuney, continuing to have to be the left tackle just because of a game like that,”Whitworth added.

Kansas City’s decision to trade Thuney to the Chicago Bears for financial reasons has only deepened the team’s concerns heading into the 2025 season.

With $18 million over the cap, the Chiefs are left to confront the reality of rebuilding an offensive line that faltered during crucial moments of the Super Bowl.

Despite Thuney’s struggles, Whitworth believes the smarter move would have been to keep him at guard and address the tackle issue in the draft or free agency.

With right tackle Jawaan Taylor’s inconsistency and the benching of Wanya Morris last season, the Chiefs are now left with limited options.

“They’re going to have to figure something out,”Whitworth concluded.

“Can their young tackle step up? Or do they shift Jawaan Taylor to left tackle and find a new right tackle?”

Whitworth’s remarks echo the frustration felt by many, especially as the Chiefs face a similar issue to the one they encountered in Super Bowl LV, when the offensive line’s inability to protect Mahomes ultimately led to their defeat.

“When they protect Mahomes, they are a really tough team to beat,”Whitworth noted.

“That’s got to be their top priority right now.”

Meanwhile, the Chiefs are also facing the potential departure of safety Justin Reid.

With his $14.2 million cap hit and a looming free-agent contract, Reid’s future with the team is uncertain.

As the team looks to retool their offensive line, Reid’s situation could add another layer of complexity to Reid’s offseason decisions.

As the Chiefs prepare for 2025, it’s clear that fixing the offensive line must be their primary focus.

Only then can they continue to protect their franchise quarterback and keep their championship aspirations alive.
