For the Milwaukee Bucks, the stakes go beyond wins and losses, it’s about the future of franchise star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Recent reports have reignited speculation about whether the two-time MVP will remain in Wisconsin.
Doc Rivers addressed all the rumors about Giannis’s departure from the Bucks
This week, news emerged that Antetokounmpo and his agent had discussions with the Bucks regarding his long-term plans. The conversation was quickly overshadowed by a calf injury he suffered during a game against the Detroit Pistons.
Speaking on his podcast, Off Guard with Austin Rivers, Austin Rivers shared his perspective on how the organization and fans view these rumors.
“He’s okay to be able to move on. I don’t think anybody in Milwaukee has any ill will, either. Anytime these rumors come out, people are more sad, like he’s leaving, not mad. There’s a difference,” Rivers said.
Bucks fans and franchise show support amid uncertainty
He explained that fans’ reaction is one of disappointment rather than anger. “They’re sad because they know how great he is and what he’s meant to the community, and they’re sad that it’s over,” he added.
Despite the team’s struggles, including a 10-13 record and criticism over trading future picks to acquire Damian Lillard, Rivers believes the Bucks have made genuine efforts to build a competitive roster around Antetokounmpo.
He also suggested that if a trade ever became necessary, Milwaukee would respect Giannis‘ wishes.
The recent injury adds another layer of uncertainty. Antetokounmpo left the court early against Detroit and did not return after suffering a calf issue.
While MRI results are pending, Rivers described the incident as unsettling but stressed he has no confirmed medical details.
“His injury… it scared people because the way he was shaking his head on the ground was like, ‘This didn’t feel right,’ but I don’t know for sure,” Rivers said.
He emphasized that while it doesn’t appear to be an Achilles tear, it’s enough to make fans and the organization cautious, especially in the context of potential trade discussions.
