There is no doubt that the Cleveland Browns have been the most dysfunctional franchise in the NFL over the past two decades. Since 1999, when the franchise returned to Cleveland, they have had only four winning seasons, each of which led to a playoff appearance. They’ve had a parade of head coaches, quarterbacks, and first overall draft picks-but this team never seems to recover.

The quarterback position has been a real circus. Of the four quarterbacks who started the preseason, only two remain, both rookies: Dillon Gabriel, the starter, and Shedeur Sanders, the backup. Kenny Pickett was sent to the Las Vegas Raiders before the season began, and Joe Flacco went to the Cincinnati Bengals last week.
Rookie Dillon Gabriel has already started two games. Last week, against the Minnesota Vikings, he didn’t look bad and even threw two touchdown passes. However, this week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he struggled. Perhaps it wasn’t entirely his fault, but as a rookie, he ended up throwing the ball 52 times with virtually no production.

While the Browns are struggling at quarterback, let’s remember that in 2021, after a season riddled with injuries, Cleveland decided to part ways with Baker Mayfield to sign Deshaun Watson to a five-year, $230 million guaranteed contract. That decision has proven to be a complete failure, while Mayfield has become one of the league’s best quarterbacks.
Last season, Mayfield finished with 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdown passes with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2025 so far, he has been simply spectacular: 1,539 passing yards (4th in the NFL) and 12 touchdown passes (tied for 3rd).
On his show The Herd, analyst Colin Cowherd expressed his opinion on Baker Mayfield, calling him the frontrunner for MVP: “Right now, Baker Mayfield, I think he’s got everybody’s vote as the Most Valuable Player.”
This could very well happen. In the past two weeks, the top MVP candidate, Josh Allen, has struggled with the Buffalo Bills, suffering two prime-time losses. If Baker Mayfield keeps up his current pace, it could be a historic season. There’s still a long way to go, but Mayfield is dominating the National Football Conference.
