Bears eye Mike McCarthy as potential head coach amid Cowboys contract uncertainty

The Chicago Bears‘ search for a new head coach is intensifying, and they’ve reportedly added an intriguing name to their list: Mike McCarthy. According to ESPN, the Bears have requested permission to interview McCarthy, whose contract with the Dallas Cowboys expires on January 14.

Until that date, the Cowboys hold exclusive negotiation rights with McCarthy. If the Cowboys don’t reach a new deal with him by then, Chicago will have the opportunity to pursue McCarthy as a free agent.

Mike McCarthy shares emotional embrace with Cowboys staff after season finale against Washington

McCarthy, who has served as Dallas‘ head coach since 2020, led the team to a playoff victory during his tenure but couldn’t secure an extension after a disappointing 7-10 season in 2024. The Cowboys‘ early playoff elimination left McCarthy’s future in question, especially after failing to meet expectations despite winning the NFC East in 2023.

A crucial decision for the Bears’ future

The Bears are at a pivotal point in their franchise’s history. Following a disastrous first season with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, Chicago is seeking stability and a coach capable of developing their young talent.

Mike McCarthy, an NFL veteran with 18 years of head coaching experience, seems to fit that profile. As a former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, he has the skills needed to guide a young quarterback like Williams. However, McCarthy’s history of game management mishaps and postseason underperformance raises questions about whether he’s the right choice for Chicago’s future.

What’s next for McCarthy and the Cowboys?

For now, the ball is in the Cowboys‘ court. Owner Jerry Jones has kept his plans vague, offering little clarity on McCarthy’s future. When asked about McCarthy following the Cowboys‘ season-ending loss to the Washington Chiefs, Jones said, “I’ll follow the same timeline I’ve used in the past.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy has expressed his desire to remain in Dallas, stating, “I’ve invested a lot in this place, and the Cowboys have invested a lot in me.”

As the clock ticks toward January 14, the Bears and Cowboys must decide what’s next for McCarthy and whether he could be the key to Chicago’s long-term success. Only time will tell if McCarthy’s next chapter involves wearing Bears colors.
