In a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick shared his thoughts on the Kansas City Chiefs’ acquisition of pass rusher Joshua Uche.
The Chiefs traded a 2026 sixth-round draft pick to the Patriots for Uche, a move that has drawn attention from fans and analysts alike.
Belichick praises Chiefs’ move for Uche
Belichick expressed his approval of the trade, stating, “(The Chiefs) didn’t give up anything in my mind.”
His remarks come in the wake of Kansas City’s ongoing efforts to bolster its defense, especially with injuries sidelining key players like Charles Omenihu and Mike Danna.
The Chiefs were in need of depth and experience on their defensive line, and Uche, who previously tallied 11.5 sacks in a standout 2021 season, fits the bill.
“Look, Josh Uche’s a really good rusher,” Belichick continued.
“He hasn’t had a chance to rush much this year for the Patriots because they’ve been behind a lot. The situation hasn’t been good.”
This season, Uche has struggled for playing time, with his snap count dwindling as he faced challenges in the Patriots’ defense.
Belichick emphasized Uche’s strengths, noting, “He’s got surprising power for his size. He’s got excellent quickness and a good get-off, and he has some flexibility in coverage.”
The former head coach believes that Uche will have ample opportunities to make an impact in Kansas City, stating, “I think he’ll really help them.”
Uche set to debut for the Chiefs on MNF
Uche’s performance will be put to the test as he makes his debut for the Chiefs in a primetime matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football.
With the Chiefs looking to solidify their defensive front, the trade could prove pivotal in their quest for another championship run.
While some have questioned the Patriots’ decision to part ways with Uche for what seems like a modest return, insights from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer shed light on the situation.
According to Breer, the Patriots had concerns about Uche’s commitment and performance in the team’s defensive scheme, prompting the trade.
