It is clear that Shedeur Sanders is a polarizing figure, which is why he has become one of the most scrutinized players in American sports. The current quarterback of the Cleveland Browns is extremely confident, wears flashy jewelry, and speaks with strong self-belief – traits that are not always well received by public opinion.
Many fans even took satisfaction in watching him slide in the most recent NFL Draft. Once projected as a first-round talent, five quarterbacks were selected before his name was finally called in the fifth round, when Cleveland picked him at No. 144 overall.
In Sanders’ mind, he envisioned arriving as an immediate NFL star and earning the starting job right away. That did not happen. He joined the Browns as the team’s fourth option and worked his way up. It wasn’t until Week 11 – after Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion – that Sanders stepped into the starting role.
Respect inside the locker room
Another reason Sanders has faced criticism is because he is the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, who also served as his head coach at Jackson State and Colorado. Many believed he benefited from special treatment, but his NFL journey has shown that nothing has been handed to him.
Defensive tackle Shelby Harris recently shared insights that surprised many: “I was highly impressed with the kid. I believe that he definitely got the short end of the stick. Everyone made all these big deals about stuff that was out of his control… But the one thing I’ll say is Shedeur works his a** off.”
He is not alone in that sentiment. Cleveland’s defense – considered the most talented unit on the team – includes leaders such as Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward, and neither has questioned Sanders’ professionalism. Through effort and dedication, he has earned their respect.
A battle still ahead
This does not guarantee him the starting job in 2026, as he is expected to compete directly with Deshaun Watson. However, having the support of locker-room leaders could be crucial when head coach Todd Monken is asked to make his decision.
This story still has many chapters left to be written. And Shedeur Sanders will continue walking a difficult path until he reaches his ultimate goal.
