He knew he could not escape the punishment as well as the fans. On Monday, the NFL announced that former Detroit Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton has been suspended for the first eight games of the 2024 season without pay due to a violation of the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.

This offseason, Sutton was involved in a dispute that originally resulted in a domestic battery by strangulation charge that was later downgraded to a misdemeanor. According to reports, Sutton will not appeal this suspension and the now Pittsburgh Steelers player will stay away from the field for a while.

There had been a warrant for Sutton’s arrest for almost a month, and after the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released the warrant, while Sutton was at the Lions facility at the time, Detroit released Sutton a day later.

He found a new team hoping for another chance

Cameron Sutton has since signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year contract. This team was the one that drafted him, but now he will be forced to miss the first half of the 2024 season.

“We were able to reach out to Cam and talk about it, and we suggested he seek counseling and do the right thing and turn himself in,” Lions team president Rod Wood said after the incident. “After that, we met the rest of the day and the next morning to decide whether to release him.”

Sutton would later turn himself in and agree to enter a Domestic Violence Intervention Program to avoid prosecution.

Last year, Sutton was the Lions’ No. 1 cornerback on defense, starting all 17 games for Detroit. But this offseason, the Lions made a ton of moves to strengthen the position, including trading for Carlton Davis, signing Amik Roberts and drafting Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
