Candace Parker snaps at Shaquille O’Neal’s criticism: “I’ts not like barbeque chicken”

Few players in basketball history can compare to Shaquille O’Neal. His towering physique allowed the NBA star to impose a style of play that very few can afford. However, the former player seemed unaware of this, until Candace Parker gave him a reality check.

Recently, Parker took the opportunity on Bloomberg Originals to share her thoughts on the persistent disagreements she’s had with Shaq-most notably, his “just get the ball and score” philosophy.

While Shaq insists this approach is straightforward, Parker disagrees, highlighting how his impossing 7-foot, 300-pound frame is a privilege most players don’t share.

“The battle I have with Shaq all the time is, he’s like, ‘just get the ball and score,'” Parker explained. “And I’m like, ‘Shaq, not everybody is 7ft, 300 pounds. It’s not barbeque chicken for me! I gotta do a couple of moves.'”

Shaq vs. the women

Despite their differences, Parker values the chance to talk basketball with icons like Shaq, acknowledging that her experiences have enriched her perspective on the game. Yet, this isn’t the only time Shaq’s opinions on women’s basketball have raised eyebrows.

In a recent discussion on Unapologetically Angel, O’Neal suggested lowering the rims in the WNBA to encourage more dunks-a controversial proposal he believes would boost the game’s excitement.

But WNBA rising star Angel Reese didn’t hold back her disapproval. “So that we can dunk? No! I hate when men say that,” Reese shot back, capturing the frustration of many fans who feel women’s sports should be celebrated for its unique style, not molded to mimic the men’s game.

O’Neal and his admiration for Parker

For all their debates, there’s no denying the bond Shaq shares with both Parker andReese. In fact, earlier this year, after Parker’s retirement, Shaq took a heartfelt moment to express his admiration.

“I don’t have a question… Just want to say I love you. I’m so proud of you,” he said on Inside the NBA, showing a softer side that Parker deeply values.

Their camaraderie, even through disagreements, highlights how the WNBA’s growing influence is sparking important discussions about the sport. And with advocates like Parker and Reese challenging traditional views, the spotlight on women’s basketball continues to shine brighter than ever.
