It’s safe to say that Charles Barkley didn’t take too kindly to Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick’s recent condemnation of league broadcasters.
It all began a few weeks ago when Redick was asked about the NBA’s TV ratings, which have taken a hit in the first few months of the season.
The NBA was facing an 18-percent drop in the Nielsen ratings before Christmas Day. The five-game slate on December 25 drew an average of 5.34 million, which was an 87-percent increase for ESPN compared to just a year ago.
Fans and pundits, including Barkley, have placed the blame on a variety of factors, including too many threes, stars being rested too often and too many teams being uncompetitive.
Redick rejected this claims while speaking ahead of the Lakers’ game with the Sacramento Kings on December 19.
“I don’t think we … have done a good job of storytelling, of celebrating the game,” Redick said.
“If I’m a casual fan and you tell me every time I turn on the television that the product sucks, well, I’m not going to watch the product. And that’s really what has happened over the last 10 to 15 years. I don’t know why. It’s not funny to me.”
While Redick didn’t mention anyone specifically, many felt he was referencing the ‘Inside the NBA’ crew which features Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson.
Barkley hits back
Nevertheless, Barkley didn’t need to hear his name to fire back at Redick during Thursday night’s show.
“He said something about, ‘What’re the reasons people ain’t watching this crappy product we got,’ like we out there jacking up a hundred threes a night,” said Barkley.
From there Barkley took aim at Redick’s job security, with the first-year coach currently guiding the Lakers to a 19-14 record.
“JJ, you come for the king you better not miss, because I can get you brother,” Barkley said. “Remember I got your Lakers’ games. You can’t hide them flaws they got. You just a dead man walking.
“They got rid of Frank Vogel who did a good job. They got rid of Darvin Ham who did a good job. You came out there thinking you were gonna change things with that same ugly girl you went on a date with.
“He came in there thinking, ”I can make this thing work.’. Hell you can! Put some makeup on that pig! The Lakers stink, man.”
While some fans praised Barkley for his comments on X, one user stated that he was proving Redick’s point.
“Chuck is just proving JJs point,” one fan wrote on X. “He was going off during highlights of the game they were supposed to be covering but he was too concerned with s***ting on Reddick (sic) and the Lakers.
“That’s all they do. They provide zero analysis or insight into the game. They barely even watch hoop.”
