The death of former Chicago Bulls player Bob Love, a three-time All-Star, has left the NBA in mourning after he passed away at the age of 81 following a long battle with cancer, and figures such as Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal expressed their condolences.
He was nicknamed ‘Butterbean’ because he liked beans and with his departure he put an end to a life in which he was an example of resilience and an unbreakable commitment to excellence both on and off the court.
TNT’s Inside Guys, Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith, paid tribute to ‘Butterbean’ Love on Inside the NBA, whom they acknowledged they admired before they were professional players. Shaq said he did not know him, but he did see his games.
“I always think it’s important for me, Kenny, Shaq and all the players who are in the future to thank these guys for doing all the heavy lifting. We are very fortunate and blessed by players like this,” said Barkley.
Bob Love’s NBA legacy
Love’s influence extended far beyond basketball. As the Chicago Bulls recalled in the statement on his death: “With his No. 10 jersey hanging in the rafters of the United Center, his on-court accomplishments are forever etched in history, but Bob’s impact transcended basketball.”
‘Butterbean’ was an inspiring figure and passionate community ambassador for the Bulls, dedicating himself to charitable causes and uplifting countless lives with his motivational speeches.
In 2024, Love was recognized in the inaugural class of the Bulls’ Ring of Honor, a testament to his lasting impact on the organization and his legacy as a community leader with a story that will inspire generations to come.
