Chiefs eyeing Kareem Hunt for potential return after Pacheco injury

The Kansas City Chiefs are exploring the possibility of reuniting with former star running back Kareem Hunt as they look to fill the gap left by the injured Isiah Pacheco.Hunt is scheduled to visit with the Chiefs, sparking speculation that the team may bring him back to bolster their running game after Pacheco’s recent injury.

Pacheco, who emerged as the Chiefs‘ primary running back, is expected to miss six to eight weeks following a broken fibula sustained in the Week 2 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. With this significant loss, the Chiefs are searching for a seasoned replacement to step into the starting role, and Hunt appears to be a viable option.

Kareem Hunt: a familiar face in Kansas City

Hunt, who is currently a free agent, began his NFL career with the Chiefs in 2017, where he made an immediate impact. As a rookie, he rushed for 1,327 yards and scored eight touchdowns, quickly becoming one of the league’s most dynamic running backs. However, his tenure in Kansas City came to an abrupt end in November 2018 when the Chiefs waived him following the release of a video showing Hunt involved in a physical altercation with a woman. He was later suspended for eight games by the NFL.

After leaving Kansas City,Hunt spent the next four seasons with the Cleveland Browns, where he continued to contribute as both a rusher and receiver. Over the course of his career, Hunt has accumulated 4,436 rushing yards, 40 rushing touchdowns, and 1,890 receiving yards with 17 touchdown receptions.

Chiefs’ running back depth tested

The injury to Pacheco leaves the Chiefs with limited options in the backfield. Rookie Carson Steele stepped in during Sunday’s win over the Bengals, recording seven carries for 24 yards and a fumble. Veteran Samaje Perine is also available to carry the load, but neither option provides the same level of production that Hunt could offer if he returns to Kansas City.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the team’s search for a replacement during a press conference, stating that general manager Brett Veach is “looking at people” in the free agent market. While Reid acknowledged that the Chiefs are fortunate to have depth, the possibility of adding Hunt to the roster could provide a much-needed boost to the team’s offense.

As the Chiefs evaluate their options, fans will be watching closely to see if Hunt‘s visit leads to a second chapter in Kansas City.
