Chiefs hold off on extending Isiah Pacheco’s contract for a reason that Patrick Mahomes might not agree with

The Kansas City Chiefs are taking a cautious approach when it comes to extending running back Isiah Pacheco’s contract, and their reasoning may not align with quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ perspective.

Despite the 25-year-old’s contributions to the team, scoring 13 touchdowns in three seasons, the organization is hesitant to commit to a long-term deal until the running back proves he can remain consistently healthy.

The Chiefs have opted to delay discussions on Pacheco’s contract extension, despite his strong performances in previous seasons, because he only appeared in seven games throughout 2024/25 and has just 30 starts from 54 opportunities.

Although he is still on his four-year rookie contract worth $3.7 million, the Chiefs’ front office is expected to take a wait-and-see approach before investing in a significant contract extension because of his history of injuries is a major factor in the team’s decision.

Since entering the league in 2022, he has dealt with multiple injuries, including a torn labrum, a broken hand, a fractured fibula, rib injuries, and concussions. Although he manages to recover, it’s far from ideal.

Could letting him go unsettle Mahomes?

Despite the Chiefs’ cautious stance, Mahomes has been vocal in his support for Pacheco, praising his teammate’s determination and toughness, often highlighting his relentless running style and ability to finish plays.

The 29-year-old has referred to Pacheco as “the most consistent young guy” he has worked with, underscoring his confidence in the running back’s ability to contribute to the team’s success of two Super Bowls since 2022.

Pacheco’s aggressive playing style, while effective, has also resulted in penalties, such as his ejection for throwing punches in a recent game. However, Mahomes defended his teammate, emphasizing that his competitive fire is what makes him a valuable asset to the team.

The reality of the NFL is that running backs often have short career spans due to the physicaltoll on them and the Chiefs are aware of this. With Pacheco set to count just $1.1 million against the salary cap in 2025, they are in no rush to commit to a rumored $48 million extension.

The Chiefs’ running game struggled in 2024, with Mahomes ranking third on the team in rushing yards. If Pacheco can stay healthy and deliver a strong performance in the upcoming season, he could secure a lucrative extension.

However, if his injury struggles continue, the Chiefs may be forced to explore other options despite Pacheco being known for his determination and work ethic and well-liked by his quarterback.
