Chiefs’ Injury Update: Patrick Mahomes cleared, but WR troubles loom ahead of MNF showdown with Bucs

Kansas City Chiefs fans got a mixed bag of news on Saturday. The good news? Patrick Mahomes is confirmed to play in Monday Night Football’s Week 9 faceoff against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The bad news? The Chiefs’ passing offense took another hit with an injury to a key receiver.

The Chiefs (7-0) and the Buccaneers (4-4) will square off at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, with both teams facing notable player absences. While Kansas City aims to protect its undefeated record, Tampa Bay is hungry for a win to keep pace with the NFC South Division leaders, the Atlanta Falcons (5-3).

Chiefs injury report

After last week’s brief scare over Mahomes’ reported ankle discomfort, Chiefs fans breathed a sigh of relief as the star QB practiced in full throughout the week. Although his official status for Monday wasn’t listed, all signs point to Mahomes leading his team as usual.

Unfortunately for Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid, receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster will be sidelined due to a nagging hamstring injury that kept him off the practice field this week.

Additionally, linebacker Mike Danna and cornerback Nazeeh Johnson, both starters, will miss Monday’s game, along with third-string defensive ends B.J. Thompson and Charles Omenihu.

Buccaneers injury report

Tampa Bay, too, is facing some challenging roster gaps. Most notably, star wide receiver Mike Evans will be out due to a hamstring injury.

Compounding the issue for quarterback Baker Mayfield, both starting receiver Jalen McMillan and backup Sterling Shepard are listed as questionable, which leaves the team short on fully healthy options for one of its toughest matchups this season.

With Monday Night Football fast approaching, both teams will need to adapt to their injury setbacks. Whichever team adjusts best may be the one celebrating a crucial victory under the bright lights at Arrowhead Stadium.
