After years of speculation and negotiations, the Washington Commanders are officially heading back to where their legacy was built. Sources confirmed that the team and the District of Columbia have reached a deal to construct a new stadium on the site of the iconic RFK Stadium, the franchise’s home from 1961 to 1996. An official announcement is expected Monday morning, marking a historic moment for the organization and its fans.
The move has been a priority for Commanders owner Josh Harris since he purchased the team in July 2023. Growing up in Maryland, Harris has often spoken about the emotional connection he feels to RFK Stadium and the memories it holds for the franchise and the city.

New stadium plans and major ambitions
While the terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed, reports earlier this month suggested the cost of the new stadium project could exceed $3 billion. Washington mayor Muriel Bowser’s vision for the site goes beyond football, aiming to create a massive complex that includes housing, hotels, retail space, parking, and a recreational facility. Bowser has also expressed hopes of attracting major events like the Super Bowl, the NCAA Final Four, and major concerts to the revamped area.
The project still faces some hurdles, particularly regarding the use of public funds. D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson reiterated earlier this month that he opposes using taxpayer money for the stadium, signaling that further negotiations may be required before the plan is finalized.
The emotional pull of RFK Stadium
RFK Stadium remains a beloved landmark for longtime Commanders fans. During their years at RFK, Washington played in five Super Bowls and captured three titles, creating an emotional bond that few other stadiums can match. Harris and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell successfully lobbied Congress to pass legislation giving D.C. control of the land for the next 99 years, a critical step that cleared the way for this deal.
The Commanders had also explored options in Maryland and Virginia, but the emotional significance and central location of RFK made it the preferred choice. Now, with plans moving forward, the team and its fans can look forward to building new memories in a place rich with history.
