The Dallas Cowboys have another contractual controversy on their hands.
Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, entering the final year of his rookie deal, is a no-show at the Cowboys‘ mandatory minicamp in Dallas — right after Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson has reset the market for wideouts with a record-breaking contract extension. The increasingly-fraught situation in Dallas is applying pressure on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to thrash out a deal with his star pass-catcher and keep him at AT&T Stadium for the foreseeable future.
Where is CeeDee Lamb?
Lamb is coming off a career year for the NFC East champion Cowboys. The 25-year-old caught an NFL-best 135 passes for a career-best 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns — and he will have been aware that Jefferson just signed a contract that will pay him a guaranteed $110 million despite missing much of the 2023 season through injury.
Lamb’s holdout from minicamp appears to be a direct response to Jefferson’s market-setting contract, and a strong message to Cowboys leadership to pay up. Lamb’s contract isn’t the only pressing topic in Dallas’ front office — quarterback Dak Prescott is entering the final year of his deal too, with little apparent momentum on a new contract with the NFL’s passing touchdowns leader from 2023.
The longer Lamb holds out, the more that he will be fined by Dallas. If he does not turn up for the entirety of the three-day minicamp that began Tuesday, Lamb could lose more than $100,000 at the Cowboys’ discretion. But as for Lamb’s current whereabouts, he was most recently seen in California, filming a new ad campaign for the NFL centered on its flag football initiative.
