Cowboys could hit home run at quarterback by recreating the Tony Romo and Dak Prescott dynamic

It’s pretty clear that the Dallas Cowboys aren’t completely sold on Dak Prescott as the franchise’s long-term answer at quarterback. Jerry Jones and the front office took until literally the last hours of the offseason last year before handing Prescott a big contract extension. A team fully sold on their quarterback would have done it much earlier in the offseason.

Then came a brutal season, with Prescott missing most of it due to an injury. Although it’s been out of his control, Prescott has missed 26 games since 2020. He has also been inconsistent, mixing elite seasons with mediocre ones. Prescott is Dallas’ guy at quarterback until noted otherwise, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Cowboys draft a signal-caller in the 2025 NFL Draft and try to recreate the scenario Prescott came into the league with.

Josh Allen had some words for Dak Prescott after signing huge contract extension

Prescott was drafted in 2016 in the fourth round to back up an aging Tony Romo, who had dealt with several injuries in the years prior. Right before the 2016 season, Romo’s body broke down for the final time. He suffered a compression fracture in his back that knocked him out for the first 10 games of the season. Prescott came in and played so well as a rookie that he supplanted Romo as the team’s starter for the rest of the season.

Could Quinn Ewers or Dillon Gabriel interest the Cowboys in 2025 NFL Draft?

Romo retired the following offseason and Prescott took over completely as the franchise quarterback. Now, Jones could be looking to create that same dynamic. According to reports, the Cowboys are interested in Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers is expected to go in the fourth or fifth round, which would give the Cowboys a cheap entry into the Romo-Prescott plan.

Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel could also be an option. In fact, Mike Poland of Blogging The Boys compares him to Romo: “The way he dissects defenses and throws with a very quick release, he almost compares to Tony Romo“.
