With NFL free agency just around the corner, the Dallas Cowboys are preparing to bolster their roster with a clear goal in mind: to strengthen the defense.
While the offense seems stable, the team needs to improve several defensive positions. With salary cap space available and two first-round picks in the upcoming draft, Dallas could become one of the most active teams on the market.
The offense seems defined
On offense, the Cowboys have already secured important pieces. Running back Javonte Williams signed a contract extension, while wide receiver George Pickens received the franchise tag, ensuring his continuity at least for the upcoming season.
With this in mind, the priority now is clearly to strengthen the defense.
Defensive end / outside linebacker
Among the possible targets is Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who could command close to $25.4 million annually. The veteran had 35 sacks between 2023 and 2024, so he would be an immediate boost to the pressure on the opposing quarterback.
A mid-priced alternative would be Josh Uche, currently with the New England Patriots, who is coming off a season with 7.5 sacks and 74 pressures according to Pro Football Focus.
For a cheaper option, there’s veteran Kyle Van Noy of the Baltimore Ravens, whose experience could help as a mentor for younger players.
Inside linebacker
In this position, the most eye-catching name would be Devin Lloyd of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who could become the highest-paid linebacker on the market.
An intermediate option would be Nakobe Dean of the Philadelphia Eagles, seen as an ideal complement to DeMarvion Overshown in defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s scheme
A more affordable alternative is Leo Chenal of the Kansas City Chiefs, a versatile player who could play a number of defensive roles.
Corner
The secondary is also a key area for Dallas. Among the main options is Alontae Taylor of the New Orleans Saints, who could act as a “star” player in multiple defensive positions.
An intermediate option would be Taron Johnson, a veteran of the Buffalo Bills and a second-team All-Pro in 2023.
For a cheaper bet, there’s Kader Kohou of the Miami Dolphins, who is returning from an ACL injury that kept him out all of last season.
Safety
In the safety position, the main target could be Jalen Thompson of the Arizona Cardinals, a player who has already worked with cornerbacks coach Ryan Smith.
Among the intermediate alternatives is Reed Blankenship of the Eagles, who recorded seven interceptions between 2023 and 2024.
Finally, a budget option is PJ Locke of the Denver Broncos, who could find a more important role on another team.
A defense in need of reconstruction
With an already established offense, the Cowboys aim to use free agency and the draft to rebuild their defense and compete for the NFL title once again.
The upcoming offseason will be key in determining whether Dallas can turn those needs into signings that really make a difference
