Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy’s unlikely turnaround: From NFL hot seat to hot commodity

As the Cowboys close out their first losing season since 2020, all eyes are on head coach Mike McCarthy.

The head coach’s future with the team is seemingly on a tightrope.

Despite a disappointing year, McCarthy is now rumored to be a “hot candidate” for other NFL head coaching positions.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has refrained from providing any direct insight into McCarthy’s status.

When asked about the coach’s future, Jones was measured in his response.

“I don’t have any comment this morning other than what you just said, and I think the fan sentiment has shown that Mike’s certainly got the kind of coaching background and coaching success that would make him a very qualified coach in the NFL,”Jones stated.

He also added, “What I’m not going to do this morning is to get into any indication one way or the other that I’m not interested in having Mike back, I don’t want that to be the case at all.”

Despite this, McCarthy, who has led the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-5 seasons, has suddenly found himself in the midst of a potential bidding war.

NFL insiders like Jay Glazer and Adam Schefter have reported that McCarthy could be pursued by other teams if the Cowboys decide not to re-sign him.

“Mike McCarthy is on other teams’ coaching lists if the Cowboys decide not to re-sign him,”Glazer remarked.

Schefter echoed similar sentiments, noting that McCarthy has the freedom to speak with any team interested in his services.

While McCarthy’s agent, Don Yee, is likely playing a significant role in this sudden shift in perception, it’s clear that teams such as the Jets, Bears, and Saints could be looking to bring in the Super Bowl-winning coach.

“McCarthy may well have other head coaching opportunities upon hitting free agency,” NFL.com reported, citing the Jets and Saints as possible suitors.

However, Jones remains optimistic about McCarthy’s tenure, despite the team’s struggles this season.

“Well, I feel good about Mike McCarthy,”Jones said.

“The main thing is, I like the job that he’s done, it’s unfortunate we’ve had the year that we’ve had, but I feel good about Mike.”
