Another season went by in 2024 in which the Dallas Cowboys failed to win the Super Bowl. That makes it 29 years since the last time the team was able to lift the Lombardi Trophy. Since then, it has been nothing but playoff failures despite being the most valuable sports team in the United States.
There is a litany of reasons for why the Cowboys haven’t been able to replicate their previous success, but the common denominator has been Jerry Jones. Once considered one of the best executives in the NFL, Jones has become an easy target for criticism during this dry run for the Cowboys. His overarching and overreaching nature has not endeared him to fans. Right now, he’s in the midst of trying to clean up his own mess, launching feet-first into a head coaching search after getting rid of Mike McCarthy.

Jones took too long to make a decision on McCarthy, and now looks likely to hire internally. Most reports have Brian Schottenheimer as the front-runner. He has no previous head coaching experience and has bounced around the league due to never actually running good offenses.
It’s an uninspiring hire to begin with if it happens, but before it does, the Cowboys continue to lose coaches. On Friday, it was reported that Al Harris has agreed to terms to join the Chicago Bears and new head coach Ben Johnson.
Harris was the Cowboys’ defensive backs coach from 2020 to 2023, then was promoted to assistant head coach in addition to his previous role in 2024. The former All-Pro cornerback has overseen some historic seasons from Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland over the past few seasons and is highly regarded around the league.
Going from the Cowboys to the Bears was once considered a major downgrade, but Harris saw a better opportunity in a better situation in Chicago. It was no guarantee he would remain under a new head coach in Dallas anyway.
