It has been a stressful summer for Dallas Cowboys fans. It’s not enough that superstar receiver CeeDee Lamb — Cowboys aficionados are also sweating over the future of star signal-caller Dak Prescott.

Prescott is a free agent following the 2024 season, and momentum toward a new deal has been slow, with Prescott’s side and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones both dug in hard on their respective positions. As Cowboys training camp gets underway in Oxnard, California, Prescott has offered a much-anticipated update on his contract talks — and depending on your viewpoint, the news might not be positive.

Concern for the Cowboys?

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Prescott acknowledged the business aspect of the NFL that many often forget. Although he said he “obviously” wants to stay in Dallas, Prescott said that there are things behind the scenes that are not in his control.

“I want to be here, but, when you look up, all the great quarterbacks I watched played for other teams,” Prescott said about his future. “My point in saying that is that’s not something to fear. That may be a reality for me one day. It may not be my decision. That’s the freedom that I have.”

Prescott isn’t wrong — Tom Brady ended his career with a team other than the New England Patriots, while Joe Montana didn’t finish his legendary career with the San Francisco 49ers. Prescott knows his worth, though — the three-time Pro Bowl selection is seeking one of the richest contracts in the NFL, and despite Jones‘ confidence in keeping him, there’s little to suggest at this point in time that he actually will.

“I say it’s a two-way street. They have wants, I have wants,” Prescott said. “This is where I became a man, but at the end of the day, it’s a business.”

It sounds like Prescott — who led the NFL in passing touchdowns last season but has come under fire for his 2-5 playoff record — is preparing to continue his career elsewhere. If he can sign off in Dallas with a Super Bowl, the parting of ways could end up being a happy one.
