ADallas Cowboys legend slammed Dak Prescott‘s commitment to the team after they were brutally dumped out of the 2023 postseason with a 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wild Card round.
Michael Irvin spent 12 years with the Cowboys as a receiver from 1988-1999 and delivered three Super Bowl titles to the franchise before being named to the 1990s NFL All-Decade Team in a career cut short by injury.
And the triple champion had strong words for the team’s quarterback ahead of the 2024 season although the January 14 loss wasn’t something he could have done much to avert as he threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns with a 68% success rate.
“Listen, I like what Green Bay is doing,” Irvin told The Jim Rowe Show. July 22. “I kept telling people, ‘This young man, Jordan Love, is going to be a great player’ and he is doing great things for Green Bay.”
“But no way the Dallas Cowboys could have lost that game. No way after the game do I want to hear you players saying they were burnt out.”
The Cowboys’ poor postseasons
There are questions over the Cowboys‘ ability to mount a credible postseason challenge following encouraging regular seasons as they’ve failed to make it past the divisional round in three consecutive attempts.
In 2021, they lost the NFC Wild Card game to the San Francisco 49ers to the score of 23-17 after winning the East with a .706 record. Then in 2022, they defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the WC before losing in the next round to the 49ers again, this time 19-12.
And then in 2023 they had the embarrassing defeat to the Packers on their home turf as the defense completely collapsed as they allowed a season-high points against by conceding 48 to Jordan Love‘s team.
“Every team defended their home turf,” Irvin went on to add. “They defended their stadium. They defended their city and their fanbase. Except the Dallas Cowboys.”
