The NFL is buzzing with speculation about Daniel Jones’ next move after his release from the New York Giants. The 27-year-old quarterback, once heralded as the Giants’ franchise savior, is now being linked to playoff contenders across the league, igniting a frenzy of rumors and debate.
According to NFL insiders, Jones is expected to clear waivers by Monday afternoon, paving the way for a free-agency bidding war. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Baltimore Ravens and Minnesota Vikings are among the top suitors for Jones, who is reportedly prioritizing joining a playoff-ready team.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added fuel to the fire by naming the San Francisco 49ers as a “very real” contender, given Brock Purdy’s lingering shoulder issues. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders have expressed organizational interest in Jones, suggesting a potential West Coast relocation for the former Giant.
Jones was not the piece the Giants needed
Jones’ departure from New York follows a dramatic downward spiral. Drafted sixth overall in 2019, Jones struggled to establish himself as a consistent leader for the Giants. Over 69 starts, he amassed 14,582 passing yards, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions, with a career record of 24-44-1.
His tenure included a single playoff appearance, highlighted by a memorable road win over the Minnesota Vikings in 2022 before falling to the Eagles in the Divisional Round.
Released due to his $23 million injury guarantee, Jones had fallen to fourth-string status behind Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock, and Tim Boyle, signaling the end of his New York chapter.
The Cowboys are not an option for Jones
Speculation even extended to the Dallas Cowboys, but Andrew Brandt, a former Packers VP, dismissed the idea outright. “They’ve got the highest-paid QB in the NFL under contract for four more years,” Brandt quipped, shutting down the notion of Jones replacing Dak Prescott in Dallas.
As the clock ticks, the NFL waits with bated breath to see where Jones will land, with potential to shake up the playoff race in the process. Is he a missing piece for a title run-or just another gamble? Only time will tell.
