Darvin Ham is proving there’s life after the Lakers: Possible Golden State Warriors role

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly eyeing significant changes to their coaching staff this offseason, sparking speculation about potential new hires. One name that has emerged in these discussions is former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham.

According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Warriors have had some conversations with Ham about joining their coaching staff. Although a hiring is not expected to materialize, this move signals the Warriors’ intent to bring in a big-name assistant, possibly a former head coach or player.

If lead assistant Kenny Atkinson departs to take the Cleveland Cavaliers’ head-coaching job, the Warriors might look to add two assistant coaches to fill the gap.

Ham, 50, led the Lakers to a 90-74 record over two seasons. Despite making it to the Play-In Tournament both years and reaching the Western Conference Finals in his first season, the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the 2023-24 playoffs by the Denver Nuggets.

Many changes are coming to GSW

Meanwhile, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has experienced considerable turnover on his staff. Alongside the potential loss of Atkinson, Mike Brown left in 2022 to coach the Sacramento Kings, and Jama Mahlalela departed in 2023 to join the Toronto Raptors’ staff. These changes underscore the Warriors’ need for experienced coaching talent.

The Warriors are also facing possible roster changes. Franchise cornerstone Klay Thompson is set to become a free agent, Chris Paul’s $30 million salary is non-guaranteed and he is likely to be cut, and the team might need to rethink building entirely around Stephen Curry after a disappointing 46-36 season that saw them miss the postseason following a Play-In Tournament loss.

As the Warriors contemplate a future without their iconic trio of Curry, Thompson, and Draymond Green, the addition of a high-profile assistant coach like Darvin Ham could be a crucial step in reshaping the team’s competitive strategy. The 2024-25 campaign could see a significantly different Warriors team both on the bench and on the court.
