Deebo Samuel shocks the NFL by revealing his reason for leaving the 49ers: “I like winners”

Deebo Samuel didn’t leave the San Francisco 49ers for just any team-he left for a winner.

“I like winners. I like to win,” Samuel declared during his introductory press conference with the Washington Commanders. “I’m not one of your biggest losers.”

After a tough conversation with 49ers GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan, both sides agreed a trade was best. Samuel handed his agent a shortlist of preferred teams, and Washington emerged as the clear frontrunner.

Fresh off an NFC Championship appearance, the Commanders’ competitive edge and familiarity with executive Adam Peters-formerly of the 49ers-sealed the deal. The added bonus? Washington is close to family in Baltimore.

The “other” reason why he went to Washington

Samuel’s winning mentality was forged in San Francisco, where he made multiple deep playoff runs, including two Super Bowl appearances. But after the 49ers’ disappointing 2024 season, Samuel saw the writing on the wall. While many believe San Francisco’s championship window is closing, he sees Washington’s opening.

“They’re already proving they can win,” Samuel said. “I’m just coming to add my dog mentality and contribute in any aspect they need me to.”

The Commanders not only traded for Samuel but also reworked his contract, guaranteeing his $17.5 million salary with an additional $3 million in incentives-something the star receiver deeply appreciated.

“For me, it just shows what they think,” Samuel said. “They put this much trust in me… I can’t come in here and let them down.”

Samuel looks to return to his best

Samuel’s best season came in 2021 when he posted 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 total touchdowns. While injuries have slowed him since, he’s determined to return to that elite form.

“They’re getting a motivated Deebo,” he promised. “I’m ready to get back to work, get around the guys, and just go from there.”

With Samuel fired up and Washington gearing up for another deep run, the NFL world will be watching to see if his gamble on the Commanders pays off.
