Deion Sanders, affectionately known as “Coach Prime,” has been making waves in college football with his transformative work at Colorado. However, recent reports suggest that Sanders may be reconsidering his commitment to the Buffaloes, with speculation mounting about his potential leap to the NFL.
Sanders‘ name has frequently been mentioned in discussions about NFL coaching vacancies, particularly for his former team, the Dallas Cowboys. Despite initially dismissing the idea of leaving Colorado, momentum has grown around the possibility of Sanders accepting an offer to replace Mike McCarthy if approached by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
NFL reporter Jordan Schultz described Sanders as a “top candidate” for the role, and ESPN’s Ed Werder added that sources close to Sanders believe he would almost certainly accept the position if offered. Werder stated on X:

“Regarding Deion Sanders: I’m being told that he would almost certainly accept if Jerry Jones offers to make him the next Cowboys head coach, that those around him are encouraging him to pursue it, and that Jones is enamored with the idea.”
Frustration at Colorado
Another factor fueling the speculation is growing tension between Sanders and Colorado’s administration. According to Jane Slater of NFL Network, Sanders recently approached Colorado Athletic Director Rick George requesting additional funds for NIL (name, image, and likeness) opportunities and his coaching staff. However, his request was reportedly met with resistance.
“When first hired, it was reported that Colorado didn’t have the cash on hand to pay Sanders his salary,” Slater reported on X. “It’s now being reported that the Buffaloes aren’t ready to provide further commitment to the program despite recent success.”
This unwillingness to invest further in the program has led to concerns that Sanders may feel unsupported, particularly as his sons prepare to transition to the NFL.
Since taking over as head coach, Sanders has brought unprecedented attention and success to Colorado, but his frustrations with the administration and the allure of an NFL coaching role could signal the end of his tenure.
While Sanders has publicly shut down rumors of a “lifetime contract” and reiterated his happiness in Boulder, the growing noise about a Cowboys offer and internal resistance at Colorado leave fans wondering: Will Coach Prime stay or move on to the next level?
