Deion Sanders’ name was one of the most mentioned to lead the Dallas Cowboys after the departure of Mike McCarthy. Although the possibility did not materialize, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes finally revealed some unexpected details of the fateful call with Jerry Jones that defined his immediate future.
The Cowboys’ season was far from ideal. With quarterback Dak Prescott far from his best form and the lack of reinforcements in the 2024 free agency, McCarthy had little room to maneuver. In the end, the 7-10 record left Dallas out of the playoffs and its head coach out of a job.
Even before McCarthy’s departure was finalized, Coach Prime’s name was already at the top of the list of his possible replacements. For months, analysts speculated about all possible scenarios, but in the end, it all came down to one call, the secrets of which Sanders just revealed.
How does Sanders have Jones listed?
Speaking on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Sanders gave some unexpected details about the call and his relationship with Jones. When the show’s host asked what name he had the Cowboys owner listed on his phone, Sanders replied with a laugh, “direct deposit.”
Coach Prime explained, “That’s what he’s under. I don’t put anybody up on their real name, so ‘direct deposit’. That’s what it was years ago.” Sanders played for the Cowboys from 1995 to 1999, even winning a Super Bowl with the team, so it’s entirely possible he’s not joking about this particular detail.
The outcome of the call is well known. Sanders turned down the offer, but not without some serious thought. “I had a lot of praying to do, praying and weighing, and I’m always led directly, or incorrectly. I wanted clarity, and wisdom, and understanding,” Coach Prime admitted.
Sanders is happy in Boulder
Although the offer to coach one of the most popular teams in the NFL was tempting, Sanders has no intention of leaving his Buffaloes. “I have every intention, every plan in the world to be coaching for the Colorado Buffs, from here on,” Sanders said on “The Pacman Jones Show” last December.
“I want to finish here. I want to put the flag. I want my name on the mountains out there. I want to put my flag down in Colorado,” Coach Prime assured. So things being as they are, Jerry Jones hired the services of Brian Schottenheimer, while Deion Sanders will keep looking to lead the Buffaloes to glory.
