Mike McDaniel, head coach of the Miami Dolphins, has acknowledged that his leadership approach may have allowed too much leniency during his first three years with the team. Reflecting on an underwhelming 8-9 season that saw the Dolphins miss the playoffs for the first time in his tenure, McDaniel admitted during a candid media session that changes are necessary to regain control and set the team on a path to success.
“I can fine people till they are blue in the face. I can take their money, I can yell at them,” McDaniel explained. “But until they understand that part of the reason that we are in [this] position is controllable … we have to clean the controllables up and we can have a chance to have success together.” His comments suggest that he believes a stricter approach may be needed to address lapses in discipline and accountability among certain players.

While McDaniel emphasized that the issue wasn’t team-wide, he did point to “certain specific individuals” who may have taken advantage of his more relaxed management style. “There’s a lot of guys that had certain fines before that didn’t have any [this season],” McDaniel said, highlighting progress among some players.
However, he noted that others were repeat offenders, and his previous strategies-such as fines and team discussions-weren’t enough to address the problem. “Bring it up as a team and continuing to fine guys wasn’t enough, so I’m not going to continue to just place all of the blame on even some of the smallest individuals that were multiple offenders.”
McDaniel: “Certain specific individuals” need to step up
The season was further complicated by injuries to key players, including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who missed significant time due to a concussion and a subsequent hip injury. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill also stirred speculation about his future with the team when he told reporters, “I’m out bro,” following Miami’s Week 18 loss to the Jets. However, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier later clarified that Hill had not formally requested a trade.
McDaniel, who received a four-year contract extension prior to this season, appears committed to recalibrating his leadership style moving forward. “I will adjust my process and make sure that it’s team-wide knowledge anytime that things are done that aren’t in the best interest of winning football games,” he said. With his seat warming up, McDaniel seems ready to take a firmer hand in shaping the Dolphins’ culture and performance.
