Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union share their agreement on their money: ‘I’m not going to trust you with 100% of anything”

Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade’s wife, recently shared the couple’s decision to split most of the bills. She made a statement that caused controversy, “I won’t trust you 100% with anything. Not my money, not my energy, not my heart,” citing the importance of maintaining individual financial independence. This might seem rude, but to me, this speaks to a healthy relationship. The public’s reaction to her comments has been mixed, with some praising her honesty and others criticizing her lack of trust.

Dwyane’s reported a $170 million net worth, compared to her $40 million, didn’t stop Gabrielle from deciding to split expenses. This might be seen as problematic by those who adapt to more traditional relationship dynamics. Today, she chooses to do this and feels comfortable.

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union’s daughter’s ‘attitude’ shocks everyone

Union explained that her decision stemmed from personal traumas, including past experiences with financial instability, that had previously prevented her from being fully vulnerable with Wade. This financial arrangement allows them both to maintain a sense of independence, strengthening their overall relationship.

During an appearance on the Balanced Black Girl podcast last week, she shared her experience of a sexual assault at 19 and was subsequently diagnosed with PTSD. She stated: “Extreme anxiety, anxiety attacks, hyperfocus on efficiency and time, and fierce independence are trauma responses.” Union explained that these trauma responses had previously made it difficult for her to fully trust and be vulnerable with Dwyane Wade.

D-Wade emotional! NBA legend opened-up about cancer battle

Dwyane Wade also addressed this. A couple of months prior, he stated that they each have different responsibilities in their lives, with Gabrielle focusing on her acting career and Dwyane on his business ventures, and both are trying to keep up with those. This separation of professional responsibilities influences their approach to shared finances. However, what brings them together in terms of finances and responsibilities is their daughter, Zaya, and their home, as they both prioritize creating a stable and nurturing environment for their family.

In December 2023, Dwyane Wade was diagnosed with cancer. Last February, Dwyane shared how his family, especially his wife, Gabrielle, didn’t abandon him and continued to support him emotionally and practically. This was a crucial part of his recovery process. That is what a healthy marriage or relationship does: help each other when needed.

Wade pays a larger portion of their mortgage, a decision made to reflect their differing income levels and allow Union to maintain her financial independence. It’s not about whether he can afford it, but, as Union explained in a recent interview, “It’s being vulnerable enough to be open enough to know that I’m OK. I’m OK as his wife.” This willingness to be vulnerable and communicate openly about finances is a key component of their healthy relationship.
