Dwyane Wade’s father talks about his son’s mental health and sparks controversy

Former player and NBA Hall of Famer, Dwyane Wade has been famous for his plays, but after his retirement in 2019, complications in his health took all the attention.

According to NBC News, in Dwyane’s daily life his doctor visits were not present after leaving the courts. Nevertheless, motivated by the health of his father, who had to face surgery due to prostate cancer, he underwent a complete medical examination.

What he did not expect to find was a tumor in his kidney. As it could not be biopsied, it had to be removed by surgery in December 2023, where he lost 40% of one of his kidneys. However, the intervention turned out to be a crucial decision for his health and his life.

With this shared diagnosis, he and his father forged a great bond, and even before his retirement, the player showed great affection and gratitude for his lessons and discipline.

Despite this, his father released an unexpectedly harsh statement to The Atlantic:

I’m not going to talk to anybody about Dwyane; that’s who I am. If I can’t understand myself, how am I going to expect anyone else to understand me? So I try to keep it at home….. I’ve always tried to instill: Be better than me. I really believe that, in a way, it took its own path

Wade Sr.’s words refer to the fact that his son attends therapy. This fact, for someone who grew up surrounded by other values and in another generation, is something that is difficult to understand at 65 years of age although that doesn’t mean he has a problem with his son’s methods of coping with what was left behind by the illness that struck them both.
