The Philadelphia Eagles are entering a pivotal offseason, but instead of clarity, new questions are emerging about the relationship between Jalen Hurts and head coach Nick Sirianni and a dynamic that could shape the franchise’s immediate future.
What was once viewed as a stable partnership following a Super Bowl run has become increasingly scrutinised. A recent claim from former Philadelphia sports radio host Tyrone Johnson has added fuel to that uncertainty, suggesting internal tensions may be more significant than previously understood.
Speaking on The Craig Carton Show, Johnson described a conversation with a former Eagles player that pointed directly toward Sirianni as the source of recent narratives surrounding Hurts.
“I reached out to a former Eagle and asked: ‘Is this stuff about Jalen Hurts all from Nick Sirianni?'” Johnson said. “And the response was one word: ‘Yes.'”
While the claim remains unconfirmed, it reflects a broader sense of unease around a team that failed to meet expectations in 2025.
According to Johnson, the tension may stem from differences in how the offense has been structured and who has been entrusted to lead it. He pointed specifically to former offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, a close associate of Sirianni, as a source of friction.
“Kevin Patullo… was the best friend literally in life of Nick Sirianni,” Johnson said. “And Jalen Hurts flat-out didn’t think he was a good coach.”
Hurts, by contrast, had developed a strong working relationship with former coordinator Brian Johnson, who was dismissed after the 2024 season.
The continued turnover at the position has left Hurts preparing to work under yet another play-caller in 2026, adding to the sense of instability.
Johnson suggested the situation has evolved into a broader internal battle over direction and influence.
“There’s a bit of a pissing contest between these two guys,” he said. “And the question is: who is going to win… the franchise quarterback or the head coach?”
Performance scrutiny adds to the pressure
The tension comes at a time when Hurts’ performances are already being dissected more closely. Despite leading Philadelphia to multiple deep playoff runs, including a Super Bowl victory, the offense regressed last season, raising concerns internally and externally.
An anonymous source told ESPN that issues such as “poor body language” and questions about coachability had been noticed within the locker room.
Those claims have been widely debated, but they contribute to a growing narrative that Hurts faces a defining stretch in his career.
Former Lavonte David added an opposing perspective, suggesting that defensive game plans against Philadelphia focused more on stopping the run than containing Hurts.
A defining season looms in Philadelphia
For all the noise, the stakes are clear. Hurts is entering a crucial phase of his five-year, $255 million contract, with only the 2026 season fully guaranteed.
That reality gives the Eagles flexibility moving forward, and places added urgency on results.
Inside the organisation, expectations appear to be aligned. As one team source told The Philadelphia Inquirer: “You’ve got to be able to produce… it’s not acceptable” given the level of talent on the roster.
Support for Hurts remains strong in parts of the locker room. Former teammate C.J. Gardner-Johnson publicly defended him, questioning why criticism continues to follow a quarterback with proven success.
“People will continue to bash this man for what reason???” Gardner-Johnson wrote.
Ultimately, the Eagles’ path forward may depend less on external narratives and more on internal alignment.
If Hurts and Sirianni can re-establish cohesion, Philadelphia remains a contender.
If not, the organisation could be forced into a difficult decision between its coach and its franchise quarterback.
