Max Verstappen has always understood his sporting career as a mixture of ambition, radical decisions whatever they may be and a strong personality. That’s how he made his debut at the age of 17, lived through crazy years and reached the top from that mythical 2021 resolution in Abu Dhabi when Hamilton was looking to overtake Schumacher. He has won four titles, came close to a fifth… and 2026 has changed everything. The Dutchman does not agree with the regulations, does not feel motivated and the bombshell has dropped: retirement is possible.
It is a real earthquake in the paddock of the Grand Circus.Verstappen finished eighth at Suzuka without being able to attack the atomic Alpine (with a Mercedes engine) of Gasly, and after the visit to the Media Pen, the news broke from DeTelegraaf, the Dutch media that has followed and informed more about the career of its driver and with closeness to the Red Bull environment. It says that Max is still not happy and that his continuity is in question
In particular, Verstappen will assess over the next few weeks and Grands Prix whether he will remain active in Formula 1. The discontent with the regulations is total, and could end the years of prime of the most talented driver to emerge in the last decade. No one doubts whether he is fast or not, because he is. But he is a thoroughbred driver and this F1 does not convince a Max who dreams of racing the best races on the planet. He will do so at Nurburgring – where he is one of the fastest without having done more than four or five sessions – and he is making eyes at Le Mans
The fundamental problem is that he does not enjoy what he is doing. “I’m 100% committed and I try to keep giving. But it’s not a healthy thing at the moment because I’m not enjoying it,” he reflected. “I have many other projects that I’m passionate about. If I stopped, it wouldn’t mean that I would stand still. I don’t want people to feel bad for me,” he added in Japan. But the information from the Dutch press goes to the next extreme.
Only time will tell if it is a decision he is contemplating, a pressure maneuver or a way of making it clear that F1 is not the only thing that drives his life. A champion is unhappy and now looks to other horizons because the great goal of his life has changed. Perhaps not even being the most successful driver will compensate Max, who always strives to be different and unique. That’s why he’s Max Verstappen and not anyone else.
