Elaine May, Ahead of Her Time

Elaine May, Ahead of Her Time

For the brilliant comedian, writer and director, Hollywood success was elusive. A new book offers perspective on the rocky career.

ImageTwo comic panels are stacked on top of one another. The first reads: “Here’s Warren Beatty as an ice cream man in the 1987 comedy ‘Ishtar.’” Below the type is an illustration of Beatty in an ice cream man uniform. He’s driving and singing, “Hot fudge love, cherry ripple.” The second panel reads: “He’s an aspiring songwriter, driving down the street, composing a goofy song out loud …” Another illustration of Beatty shows him singing “This is, bliss is … hot fudge looove cherry ripple kisses …” Children holding cash try to flag him down in the background. One says, “Hey! Ice cream truck!” and the other shouts, “Come on, stop!” Text from the top of the panel continues below: “…oblivious to the children trying to give him money.”
