Eric Dane, best known for his roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria has passed away at only 53 following a public battle with ALS. His family confirmed his death to People Magazine with a statement:
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
Dane was dealt a bad hand by fate, with the actor having really started to come into his own as a noted character actor following the success of Euphoria, where he played Cal Jacobs, the deeply closeted father of Jacob Elordi’s violent, homophobic Nate. Before that, Dane was best known for his long run on Grey’s Anatomy, where he played Dr. Mark Sloan, aka Dr. McSteamy, for 139 episodes over six seasons. While that was the role that put him on the map, Dane had been kicking around Hollywood for many years prior, having guest-starred on everything from The Wonder Years, Married… with Children, and Saved by the Bell, among many others, before landing a recurring role on Charmed. On the big screen, he played an important role in the cult classic horror film Feast and was also Multiple Man in X-Men: The Last Stand.
His success on Grey’s Anatomy propelled him to roles in rom-coms like Valentine’s Day and Burlesque, before he took another lead role on TV’s The Last Ship, which ran for four seasons. Yet just when it seemed his career was winding down, Dane nabbed his role on Euphoria. While initially portrayed as somewhat unsympathetic, showrunner Sam Levinson clearly noticed how compelling Dane had become in the role, with him taking on a more nuanced and expanded part in Euphoria Season 2. The performance earned him critical raves and seemed to kick off a second act in his career playing tough guys, with him portraying the villain in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, as well as a more heroic role in the Samara Weaving-led Borderline. He also co-starred on the Amazon Prime Video series Countdown, which ran for a single season (you can see our interview with Dane embedded below).
It was only ten months ago that Dane made his battle with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) public, having first started to exhibit symptoms in the summer of 2024. By the time he went public, he had lost the function of his right arm and hand, but nevertheless he continued to act. He guest-starred on Brilliant Minds as a firefighter diagnosed with ALS, while also reprising his role as Cal in the upcoming third season of Euphoria, which begins airing in April. Hopefully, it proved to be a fitting finish to a career cut short far too early. Dane was married to actress Rebecca Gayheart, who was steadfast in her support throughout his illness, and he is survived by two daughters.
