It seems that the most important sports broadcasting company in the world could be in for a fine. According to the Federal Communications Commission’s proposal, ESPN may look at a hefty amount of money to pay.
This could happen because of a misuse of its Emergency Alert System during last year’s NBA season. The FCC received very clear complaints about this after those said that ESPN repeatedly broadcast the EAS Tones during a sports-related promotion.
Interestingly enough, the ESPN office people acknowledged that the promotional spot mentioned by everyone was broadcasted six times between October 20 and October 24 of 2023, across two ESPN-owned networks.
It would not be the first time
If fined, ESPN will have another to its list. In 2015 and 2021, more fines were seen against them as the Commission released a statement on the situation and has everyone talking.
“This prior history was a significant factor in determining the proposed forfeiture in this case,” they said. The proposed fine by the FCC for this recent move of the company is the amount $147,000.
All this is for “violating rules on broadcasting emergency alert tones during promotional segments for the start of the 2023-2024 NBA season.” We shall see what will happen with this situation soon.
