Desmond Mason, a former NBA slam dunk winner, was sent to jail on Wednesday, November 13 for contempt of court as he failed to report for a hearing in the middle of his divorce from his wife.
The former Oklahoma City Thunder was stopped and detained by officers but later released from Oklahoma County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond as he currently tries to break away from Andrea Mason.
He was booked in around midday and released at 21:34 on a charge of contempt of court for failing to appear before the docks despite being ordered to do so, although it remains unclear who is divorcing who.
The 47-year-old spent 10 seasons in the NBA after being drafted in the first round in 2000 out of Oklahoma State. He went on to appear for the Seattle Supersonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Charlotte Hornets, Thunder and the Sacramento Kings.
He averaged 12.1 points, 1.2 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game across the decade and became the NBA slam dunk champion in 2001, defeating DeShawn Stevenson and Baron Davis in the finals.
Mason‘s career peaked in 2004/05 when he posted 17.2 points, 2.7 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game through 80 matches and 71 starts as the Bucks went on to finish 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 30-52 record.
The man from Waxahacie, in Texas, also has a passion for art and currently works as an NBA analyst and radio co-host for The Franchise, who have the ex-shooting guard/small forward focus on the Thunder.
“I paint by emotion so everything I create is a piece of me to some extent,” Mason said of his art style in 2013. He was previously commissioned to make some murals dedicated to the Bucks after their 2021 NBA Finals win.
Who do the Bucks play next?
Two of Mason‘s former teams will clash when the Bucks (4-8) head to the Spectrum Center to take on the Hornets (4-7) in North Carolina.
They will tip off at 16:00 ET/13:00 PT on Saturday, November 16 as they look to move up the Eastern Conference from 12th and 11th respectively.
