On April 8, 2024, a momentous total solar eclipse, a rare astronomical event, will grace the skies over southern Québec, offering a breathtaking spectacle. This occurrence, where the Moon completely obscures the Sun, will captivate observers for a brief yet unforgettable period. Notably, this eclipse marks a once-in-a-lifetime event, with Montréal’s last visible total solar eclipse dating back to 1932, and the next not anticipated for another 180 years!

At precisely 3:27 pm, the Sun will be fully enveloped by the Moon, heralding the climax of this celestial phenomenon. The Science Centre proudly serves as an official viewing site for this remarkable event. Simply gather at the building’s forefront to partake in witnessing this awe-inspiring display!

To enhance the viewing experience, the Science Centre offers complimentary specialized eclipse glasses meeting ISO 12312-2:2015 standards, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition to marveling at the eclipse, visitors can participate in a contest offering a chance to win a family package to Cirque du Soleil’s Kurios – Cabinet of Curiosities by scanning QR codes on-site.

To commemorate this auspicious occasion, the Science Centre, in collaboration with Cirque du Soleil, introduces giant eclipse glasses to Montréal for the summer season. Attendees can experience these and obtain complimentary eclipse glasses at designated distribution points.

Educators from the Science Centre will be present to engage visitors of all ages in understanding the science behind this extraordinary event.

For those unable to attend in person, a tent will be set up to livestream views of the eclipse from Québec’s Astrolab and the David Dunlap Observatory in Ontario.

Please note that parking lots at the Science Centre and Clock Tower Quay will be closed from 1 pm to 5 pm. Additionally, a quiet area will be provided for visitors with mobility limitations or special needs in front of the Horizon of Khufu exhibition building at 2 de la Commune Ouest. Our team eagerly awaits your presence to ensure your eclipse experience is truly memorable.
