Fernando Mendoza starts at a disadvantage with the Raiders: Kirk Cousins wins over Maxx Crosby

The Las Vegas Raiders have not yet taken the field for the 2026 NFL season, but the dynamics inside their locker room are already beginning to take shape and they could have a significant impact on the franchise’s long-term plans at quarterback.

When the Raiders handed Kirk Cousins a five-year, $172 million deal, the move was framed as a bridge between present competitiveness and future potential.

However, the early reaction from defensive cornerstone Maxx Crosby suggests the veteran’s influence may extend beyond that label, potentially complicating the path for expected No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza.

Crosby did not hesitate to voice his enthusiasm after meeting Cousins, offering a glimpse into how quickly the veteran has connected with key figures inside the organisation.

“Ran into Kirko Bangs. It was dope. We had a great conversation. He was awesome, definitely fired me up,” Crosby said on his podcast. “Dude has done a lot of great things in this league, adding him to the squad is gonna help a lot.”

Cousins, in turn, made it clear that his respect for Crosby had been established long before they became teammates. Speaking to the media, the quarterback highlighted the defensive end as one of the few players in the league who fundamentally alters game plans.

“There’s only a handful of guys in the league, maybe a half-dozen, that truly you’re thinking about the entire week,” Cousins said. “Maxx is one of those guys.”

He expanded on that point by emphasising Crosby‘s leadership qualities.

“Just his energy, his motor, his example, I think it’s really impactful to the whole organisation and the locker room,” Cousins added. “If we could have a bunch of Maxx Crosbys, we’d have as good a team as there is in the league.”

The exchange reflects more than mutual admiration. It points to a veteran quarterback quickly aligning himself with one of the Raiders‘ most influential voices, an important factor in any locker room hierarchy.

Mendoza faces the reality of NFL transition

For Mendoza, widely projected to be the future of the franchise, this evolving dynamic presents an immediate challenge.

The organisation’s long-term vision appears unchanged. Cousins offers stability and experience, while Mendoza is expected to develop into the face of the franchise. But early signs suggest the balance between those timelines may not be as straightforward as anticipated.

Crosby‘s endorsement matters. As one of the team’s leaders and most respected players, his perspective carries weight. His excitement about Cousins indicates a clear appreciation for what the veteran brings in the short term, particularly as the Raiders look to re-establish competitiveness.

That does not diminish Mendoza‘s potential, but it does underline the reality of entering a locker room where credibility must be earned quickly.

Raiders balancing ambition with development

The broader context adds another layer to the situation. Crosby himself was recently at the centre of trade discussions with the Baltimore Ravens, a deal that ultimately collapsed after a failed physical. With his future now settled, his focus has shifted back to building a winning culture in Las Vegas.

Cousins‘ arrival fits that objective. His experience and track record provide immediate legitimacy to an offence that has lacked consistency in recent seasons.

For Mendoza, the opportunity remains clear, but so does the competition, even if unofficial. Learning behind a respected veteran can accelerate development, but earning the trust of teammates like Crosby will be equally critical.

As offseason programs approach, the Raiders are attempting to bridge two timelines. The early signs suggest Cousins has already taken a step forward in one of them.
