Florida’s towering center Olivier Rioux makes a major decision about his future and enters the NCAA transfer portal

The future of Olivier Rioux is set to take a new direction after the Florida center officially announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

The 7-foot-9 Canadian, widely recognized as the tallest player in college basketball history, is now searching for a program where he can take the next step in his development.

After spending two seasons with Florida, Rioux shared the news on social media, explaining that the decision came after careful reflection on his career path.

College forward finds himself in disbelief standing next to a giant during March Madness

“After taking time to reflect on my journey and what’s best for my future, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal,” he wrote.

The move signals the end of a unique chapter for Rioux, whose presence alone brought significant attention to the program.

A unique profile with limited opportunities

Despite his extraordinary physical tools, Rioux found it difficult to secure consistent playing time with the Gators.

After redshirting during his first year on campus, he featured sparingly this past season, appearing in just 11 games and averaging only a handful of minutes per outing.

Florida’s depth in the frontcourt made it challenging for Rioux to break into the regular rotation.

Even so, he managed to create memorable moments, including a late-game dunk during a dominant NCAA Tournament win that sparked a strong reaction from teammates on the bench.

His debut earlier in the season also marked a historic milestone, as Rioux officially became the tallest player ever to appear in an NCAA game.

Gratitude and a fresh start ahead

While his role on the court remained limited, Rioux expressed deep appreciation for his time at Florida.

He highlighted the experience of representing the program and competing at a high level as one of the most meaningful periods of his life.

“It’s truly hard to put into words what these last two years and this experience has meant to me,” he said, reflecting on his journey from Quebec to college basketball in the United States.

Still only 20 years old, Rioux now enters the transfer portal with the opportunity to find a better fit and potentially a larger role.

Given his rare size and long-term potential, he is expected to draw interest from programs willing to invest in his development.

For Rioux, the decision represents both a farewell and a chance to redefine his path in the sport.
