Former Cowboys coach eyes Titans head coaching opportunity

The Tennessee Titans are officially deep into their search for a head coach, and one of the more recognizable names in recent NFL history is now scheduled to meet with team officials.

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, former Dallas Cowboys head coach and current NBC analyst Jason Garrett will interview with the Titans this Friday for their vacant sideline leadership role.

Tennessee’s coaching vacancy emerged after the franchise dismissed Brian Callahan midway through the 2025 season following a disappointing 1-5 start. That move marked the second consecutive year the Titans struggled, as they closed the season at 3-14.

Since Callahan‘s departure, interim coach Mike McCoy finished out the year, but the organization has signaled a strong desire to bring in a permanent leader who can turn around the team’s fortunes.

While the Titans have reportedly lined up interviews with a mix of experienced coaches and promising coordinators, Garrett‘s inclusion stands out because of his high-profile resume.

The 59-year-old is best known for his nine-plus seasons leading the Dallas Cowboys, where he compiled an 85-67 record, secured three NFC East titles, and earned NFL Coach of the Year honors in 2016.

Despite his regular-season success, Dallas never achieved significant playoff success under Garrett, with the team winning only two postseason games during his tenure.

Before his head coaching stint in Dallas, Garrett served as an offensive coordinator with the Miami Dolphins and the Cowboys. His most recent on-field coaching role was with the New York Giants from 2020 to 2021, a period that ended without notable team success.

Since stepping away from coaching, he has remained connected to football as a studio analyst for NBC’s Football Night in America, where he has earned praise for his insights and game analysis.

Titans considering veteran leadership

The Titans’ coaching search reflects a franchise eager to reverse years of underwhelming performance and return to playoff contention. Tennessee has not had a winning season since finishing 12-5 in 2021, which was also the last time they reached the postseason.

Over the past two seasons combined, the team has won only six games, highlighting the urgent need for strong leadership and a new strategic direction.

Garrett‘s potential hire would bring a veteran presence with a steady hand and extensive NFL experience, qualities that could benefit a team looking to rebuild confidence on both sides of the ball.

His approach is often described as disciplined and methodical, which could appeal to a Titans roster seeking consistency after years of instability.

While several other candidates are expected to interview, Garrett‘s combination of head coaching experience, offensive knowledge, and media insight positions him as a serious contender.

Friday’s interview represents an important opportunity for Garrett to reestablish himself as an NFL coach and for the Titans to evaluate a candidate who could shape their future.

Whether his style and experience align with the team’s long-term vision remains to be seen, but his meeting with the franchise is a clear indication of Tennessee’s commitment to finding the right leader.
