The conversation about who will take over as the face of the NBA once LeBron James and Stephen Curry step away has been a hot topic among fans and analysts.
Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has been a popular choice in this debate, given his electric playstyle, charismatic personality, and comparisons to Michael Jordan. However, former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas believes Edwards isn’t the right candidate, not because of his talent, but due to his personal life.

Anthoy Edwards’ personal life gets in the way
On a recent episode of No Chill Gill, Arenas argued that being the face of the league requires more than just on-court excellence.
Historically, players in that role have maintained a spotless public image, helping shape the league’s brand and attract new audiences.
In his view, Edwards’ personal life complicates that equation.
“He can’t be the face of the league,” Arenas stated.
“He’s got too many baby mamas.”
Edwards, 23, has one child with his girlfriend Shannon Jackson, but he has also been rumored to have fathered two more children.
While this aspect of his life does not affect his performance on the court, Arenas suggests that it could impact the NBA’s decision to market him as the league’s leading figure.
Interestingly, Edwards himself has expressed no interest in carrying that mantle.
When asked last month about the possibility of becoming the NBA’s new face, he responded, “Not really. That’s what they got Wemby for,” referring to San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama.
Jayson Tatum gets Gilbert Arenas’ vote
Instead, Arenas believes Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum is the most fitting choice.
He argued that, historically, the league’s most prominent player tends to be the most scrutinized by the media, and Tatum fits that mold.
“Yes, 1000%, Tatum is the face of the league,” Arenas said.
“When you talk about him negatively compared to his actual resume, this is not the ’80s or ’90s where we made our superstars look good… For the last 20-something years, it’s been a negative thing for the face of the NBA.”
Arenas added that once LeBron James retires, Tatum will likely take over as the most polarizing player in the league.
The Celtics forward has already built an impressive career, with multiple All-Star selections, All-NBA honors, and a championship to his name.
If Boston continues to dominate and adds another title to its record, the debate over the NBA’s next face might find a clear answer.
