With the Brooklyn Nets signaling a willingness to listen to major offers, Golden State has reportedly emerged as one of the teams exploring a deal for forward Michael Porter Jr., a $179 million star who could dramatically reshape the Warriors’ rotation.

NBA insider Evan Sidery reported that multiple teams, including Golden State, have checked in with Brooklyn regarding Porter’s availability. While the Nets acquired Porter during the offseason, they appear open to flipping him for future assets as they accelerate their rebuild. That openness creates a rare opportunity for the Warriors, who have been searching for a consistent scoring threat to complement Stephen Curry.

From Golden State’s perspective, Porter checks nearly every box. He’s a versatile scorer, a high-volume shooter, and a legitimate size upgrade on the wing. Head coach Steve Kerr has struggled to lock in a stable rotation this season, and despite a recent uptick in form, the Warriors’ 16-15 record reflects their inconsistency. Adding a proven offensive weapon like Porter could stabilize the attack and relieve pressure from Curry.

However, such a move would almost certainly come at a cost, and that cost is likely to be Jonathan Kuminga.

Why Michael Porter Jr. could be the missing piece

Kuminga, who has seen his role diminish and has been held out of the rotation in recent games, becomes trade-eligible on January 15. For Brooklyn, he represents exactly what they’re seeking: a young, athletic prospect with upside who could benefit from expanded minutes. Pairing Kuminga with future draft capital could give the Nets a strong foundation for their next phase.

Porter, meanwhile, is enjoying the best season of his career. At 27, he appears past his injury-plagued years and is currently averaging a career-high 25.7 points per game while leading

Brooklyn in scoring. His ability to score at all three levels would immediately address Golden State’s biggest weakness: a lack of reliable offense outside of Curry.

While Jimmy Butler has delivered strong performances, his age makes workload management crucial. Porter would allow Kerr to preserve Butler’s energy for the postseason while injecting youth and size into the lineup. That size also matters on the glass, where Golden State ranks just 19th in rebounding.

Can Porter be the one who changes things?

The biggest question is fit. The Warriors’ offense thrives on ball movement, and Porter has historically played best in freer, isolation-friendly systems. Still, his championship experience with Denver suggests he can adapt within a structured environment when the stakes are high.
