After posting Pixar’s largest opening for an original, non-sequel since Coco, Hoppers is looking to once again take the top spot at the box office this weekend. The good news for Pixar is that there’s not a ton of competition, and positive word-of-mouth should allow it to easily make a solid $25 million (with $30 million possible), as it hopes to beat the $140 million-plus grossed by Elemental a few summers ago.
However, it will have a little competition from the latest Colleen Hoover adaptation, Reminders of Him, which stars scream queen Maika Monroe, cast against type as a woman who finds love after serving a prison sentence. Hoover’s last movie, Regretting You, grossed about $13 million its first weekend, which was considered soft, but it ended up holding quite well in subsequent weeks, posting modest drops. The lack of competition for female-skewed films (after The Bride crashed and burned last week) should allow it to open to about $15 million.
Scream 7, which is falling like a lead balloon after posting a franchise-best opening, should make about $7 million this weekend as it passes $100 million. Don’t expect to see The Bride anywhere near the top five this weekend, with it likely to lose most of its modest business. I expect Project Hail Mary, which is getting a limited 70mm run in select theaters, should be able to make about $5 million in its limited showings, while A24’s buzzy Undertone (which I didn’t care for) should appeal to the studio’s fans and make $6 million or so.
The next few weekends should be better, with Project Hail Mary set to make at least $40 million, while Ready or Not 2should pull in horror audiences. That said, this will be a pretty quiet weekend, unless Hoppers really manages to pull in family audiences. We shall see. Here are my predictions:
- Hoppers: $25 million
- Reminders of Him: $15 million
- Scream 7: $7 million
- Undertone: $6 million
- Project Hail Mary (limited run): $5 million
