How Doc Rivers pushed Giannis Antetokounmpo out the door with narcissistic rant to Bucks

There was a real possibility as the NBA trade deadline neared that Giannis Antetokounmpo would be playing for a different team not called the Milwaukee Bucks. Ultimately, Giannis decided to stay, see how the season played out and assess the situation in the summer.

The 2025-26 regular season hasn’t finished yet, but the Bucks might have already gotten their answer on Giannis’ future. Unfortunately for the franchise, it isn’t good news. Everything points to Giannis leaving as soon as possible.

Plenty of things have gone wrong for Giannis to get to this point. As it turns out, head coach Doc Rivers may have played a vital role in the final decision, with a recent rant of his frustrating his team’s players.

Doc Rivers told Bucks players to “google me” and check his resume

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, citing “six people in the room”, Rivers recently held a team meeting that was received extremely poorly by the players. The reason? A pompous brag of his achievements.

In that meeting, Doc Rivers implored his team to ‘look at my resume‘ and ‘google me‘. ‘I took teams to the playoffs and championships that weren’t supposed to be there. I thought this was one of them.’

Rivers was channeling Indiana college football head coach Curt Cignetti, whose “I win, Google me” quote was backed up completely by leading the Hoosiers to their first-ever National Championship.

Rivers certainly has his fair share of accomplishments, but his tenure in Milwaukee hasn’t been close to good enough for him to drop that type of statement, especially to his own players. Surely, this is just another reason for Giannis to exit the organization, even if Rivers ends up getting fired or not. The organization is in bad shape.
