We are in the final stretch of the 2024 NFL season. There are only three weeks left before the playoffs begin and we already know who will be the favorites to play in Super Bowl LIX, which this year will be played at the Superdome in New Orleans.

In the NFC, the Detroit Lions have had a very solid year. However, they lost at home on Sunday to the Buffalo Bills, in a game where they could have put their foot down to confirm themselves as Super Bowl favorites. Their 12-2 record was matched this week by the other big favorite, the Philadelphia Eagles, who have also had a great year with the addition of Saquon Barkley as a running back. With that same record, the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Chicago Bears on Monday and now aspire to take the divisional title away from the Lions
But when teams reach the Super Bowl, is there any additional economic incentive? Is it all for glory? Can only the big players negotiate additional bonuses? Here are the answers:
The collective bargaining agreement that the players have with the NFL stipulates that, just for reaching this stage, the teams are entitled to a bonus, which varies between the winning and losing team. However, players on the same team receive the same amount, regardless of their contracts.
How much will Super Bowl LIX participants receive?
The latest collective bargaining agreement signed by the NFLPA and the NFL states that each member of the winning team will receive $171,000, an increase of $7,000 from last year’s total of $164,000
While the players of the losing team will have to ‘settle’ for a $96,000 bonus, they will also have an increase compared to the $89,000 they were given last year
However, these bonuses only apply to players who meet certain performance requirements with their teams throughout the season they are playing. In other words, the bonus is paid in full to players who:
- They have played in at least three previous regular season or playoff games and are on the team’s active or inactive list on Super Bowl Sunday
- They have played at least eight previous games (regular or postseason), regardless of whether they are on the active/inactive roster or not
- He is a veteran player who was injured during the regular season, but is still under contract.
Players in the squad who breach any of these conditions can earn a 50% bonus when:
- They have played fewer than three previous games during the regular season or playoffs and are on the team’s active or inactive roster when the Super Bowl is played.
- They are not on the active/inactive list, but played between three and seven games during the regular season or playoffs.
- This is a freshman player who was injured during the regular season, but is still under contract.
