Injured player’s sacrifice at NFL Combine puts him on Chiefs’ radar

The Kansas City Chiefs received some good news last week when Travis Kelce announced he would be returning next season.

It comes after weeks of speculation over the 35-year-old’s future, as questions hung over the star tight end following the Chiefs’ heavy defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.

Kelce’s return certainly means the Chiefs will continue to be one of the most covered teams next season, as his relationship with music sensation Taylor Swift will no doubt bring plenty of eyes to the game.

However, on the field, the Chiefs may have to readjust how they use the future Hall of Famer, who showed signs of slowing down last season.

That means the Chiefs could use the upcoming NFL Draft to address life after Kelce. Tyler Warren is one name attracting plenty of attention, but with Kansas City drafting down at No.31, the former Penn State star will be long gone by that point.

Player grabs headlines at the NFL Combine

One player who could be on the Chiefs’ radar is former Texas tight end Gunnar Helm.

The tight end didn’t turn heads after a less than impressive showing in the 40-yard-dash, but it’s what came after that has everyone talking.

Pictures showed Helm was running with a sprained ankle, and while it doesn’t mean he would have delivered a stellar 40-yard-dash time, it does show teams that he has enough toughness to play in the league.

Aside from that, Helm has shown himself to be one of the better pass-catching prospects in the draft. He may not excel in run-blocking, and that will have to improve if he wants to become more than a TE2 on any team.

However, his ability to perform despite carrying a pretty gruesome injury may be enough to keep Helm from dropping all the way down to Day 3, and could be enough to have the Chiefs take him as the heir to Kelce.
