Is this Travis Kelce’s last season? NFL insider shares why Chiefs legend is at a crossroads

The Kansas City Chiefs’ push for the playoffs ended on a heartbreaking note, sparking speculation about the future of one of the NFL‘s most iconic duos.

After years of dominance, including three Super Bowl championships together, tight end Travis Kelce and quarterback Patrick Mahomes may have played their last snap as teammates. This news has sent shockwaves through the league and left fans wondering what the next chapter holds for both stars.

Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers brought more disappointment than expected. A 16-13 loss not only knocked the Chiefs out of playoff contention but also saw Mahomes suffer a torn ACL, ending his 2025 campaign prematurely.

Surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process will be required, sidelining one of the league’s brightest talents for an extended period. The injury also raises questions about the team next season and the potential for roster adjustments.

Meanwhile, Kelce, 36, faces his own uncertain future. Having watched the season end without a postseason push, an unusual scenario for a franchise accustomed to competing at the highest level, speculation about his retirement has intensified.

Kelce had previously considered stepping away after last season’s Super Bowl loss but returned with renewed determination. However, the disappointment of this season, combined with Mahomes‘ injury, has fueled debate over whether he might choose to retire on his own terms.

Insider weighs in on Kelce’s future

ESPN insider Adam Schefter discussed Kelce‘s uncertain future during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, describing retirement as a “real possibility” once the season concludes.

“We’ll see what he ultimately decides at the end of the year,” said Schefter. “I think his future is very much up in the air. I think it’s distinctly possible that one of the greatest NFL connections of all time, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, may have played their last down together, which is hard to imagine, but that’s a real possibility here.”

NFL writer Kevin Patra also noted that Kelce‘s competitive drive might influence his decision. After returning post-Super Bowl loss, he was determined not to let his career end in disappointment.

Yet with the Chiefs missing the playoffs this year, Patra questioned whether Kelce would continue if his final season concluded without a championship appearance.

Now, at the crossroads of a career that has already cemented him as one of the NFL’s elite, Kelce must weigh the choice between pursuing another ring or concluding a legendary career.

With multiple championships, Pro Bowl honors, and a future Hall of Fame trajectory already secured, the debate over his retirement will continue to captivate fans and analysts.
