Is Tom Cruise playing the villain in Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice?

It’s been a hot minute since we heard any new details about Joseph Kosinski‘s Miami Vice movie, but according to industry leaker DanielRPK, Tom Cruise could play the film’s villain. It’s been a while since Cruise showed audiences his knack for playing an antagonist, with 2004’s Collateral giving him a chance to play a hotly-tempered hitman.

Our fingers are crossed

While this “news” is unconfirmed, we know that Cruise and Kosinski are tight after joining forces on movies like 2013’s Oblivion and 2022’s box-office burner Top Gun: Maverick. If the rumor is true, it means that Cruise could join Austin Butler (Caught Stealing, Masters of the Air, Dune: Part Two) and Oscar-winner Michael B. Jordan (Sinners, Black Panther, Creed) as James’ Sonny’ Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, respectively. The Miami Vice reboot should shoot this summer in Miami, and Cruise’s schedule is open until the promotional campaign for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger starts in September.

On the creative side, Kosinski will direct the Miami Vice reboot with Dan Gilroy (Andor, Nightcrawler) penning the script, based on an early draft by Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick). Kosinski also co-wrote the latest draft of the Top Gun: Maverick sequel, heading into production next year.

What’s the Miami Vice movie about?

According to the project’s description, Kosinski’s Miami Vice “will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami, inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the NBC television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”

The original Miami Vice helped catapult Don Johnson’s career. The dashing actor played Sonny Crockett, while Philip Michael Thomas co-starred as detective Ricardo Tubbs. The series ran for 111 episodes from 1984 to 1989. Michael Mann directed a remake in 2006, which starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Although the film received mixed reviews at the time, not to mention a lackluster box office, it has since become a cult favorite.

What do you think about Tom Cruise possibly playing the villain in Miami Vice? Are you a fan of the original Miami Vice television series? Everything is coming up Milhouse for Kosinski’s Miami Vice film, and if today’s rumor is true, we could be in for something quite special.
